Retired Resident Permit

A Retired Non-Citizen must submit a certified bank statement from their country of origin or residence showing either:

• a minimum balance of USD 24,000, or

• proof of a guaranteed monthly income of at least USD 2,000.

Yes. Mauritius supports family reunification, and dependents of Retired Residence Permit holders are eligible to apply for a Residence Permit that is valid for the same duration as the main permit holder.

Who qualifies as a dependent?

• Spouse (including an opposite-sex common-law partner)

• Unmarried children, including stepchildren and legally adopted children

• Parents of the permit holder

Important Note: Dependents are not allowed to work in Mauritius unless they obtain their own Occupation or Work Permit.

Yes. If a retiree is considered a tax resident in Mauritius, any foreign income that is remitted to Mauritius is subject to income tax. This includes pension payments, investment income, or other earnings from abroad.

However, if the income is not brought into Mauritius, it is generally not taxed.

An individual is considered a tax resident in Mauritius if they meet either of the following conditions in a given tax year:

1. They spend 183 days or more in Mauritius, or

2. They spend at least 270 days in total over the current and the two preceding tax years.

Once classified as a tax resident, the person may be taxed on income derived from Mauritius and on foreign income remitted to Mauritius.

You are eligible to renew your Residence Permit upon expiry for another 10 years.

You must have held a Residence Permit as a Retired Non-Citizen for at least five years and transferred an aggregate of at least USD 200,000 (or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency) over that period.

Holders of a Permanent Residence Permit under the Investor, Professional, or Self-Employed category may also switch to the Retired Non-Citizen category, provided they have a disposable annual income of at least USD 40,000 (or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency). The new permit will remain valid for the balance of the original validity period.

New Application – Required Documents

1. Documents to Upload for Approval-in-Principle

Prepare and upload the following documents when submitting your initial application:

• Birth Certificate – Original version in English or French. If issued in another language, provide a certified or sworn translation by a competent authority.

• Passport – Biodata page.

• Certificate of Character / Police Clearance – Covering the last ten years, issued within the past six months.

• Recent Passport Photos – Three (3) colour photographs, size 3.5cm x 4.5cm (413x531 pixels), taken within the last six months.

• Signed Undertaking – Completed and signed by the applicant.

• Copy of Existing Permit (if applicable) – Such as an Occupation Permit, Work Permit or Residence Permit.

2. Documents to Upload After Approval-in-Principle

Once your application has received Approval-in-Principle from the EDB, upload the following:

• Bank Statement – From the applicant’s Mauritian bank account.

• Marriage or Divorce Certificate – Original in English or French; if another language, include a certified or sworn translation.

• Medical Certificate and Reports – Issued within the last six months.

• Last Entry Visa Pages – Copy of the relevant passport pages.

• Copy of Any Other Permit (if applicable) – Occupation, Work or Residence Permit.

• Processing Fee – Proof of payment.

• Any Additional Documents – As may be requested by the EDB.

Renewal Application – Required Documents

1. Documents to Upload for Approval-in-Principle

When renewing your permit, submit these documents first:

• Certificate of Morality (Police Clearance) – Covering the last three years in Mauritius, issued within the past six months.

• Passport – Biodata page.

• Bank Statement – From your Mauritian bank account.

• Recent Passport Photos – Three (3) colour photos, size 3.5cm x 4.5cm (413x531 pixels), taken within the last six months.

• Copy of Current Residence Permit.

• Signed Undertaking – Completed and signed by the applicant.

2. Documents to Upload After Approval-in-Principle

Once your renewal has been approved in principle:

• Processing Fee – Proof of payment.

• Any Additional Documents – As may be required by the EDB.
