Mauritius Residency Programmes:
Every Pathway to Living in Mauritius
Work, Invest, Retire or Relocate to Mauritius
Mauritius offers one of the most accessible residency frameworks in the world. Whether you are a retiree seeking year-round sunshine, an investor looking for a strategic base between Africa and Asia, or a professional relocating for work, there is a clear pathway to obtaining a Mauritius residence permit.
Foreign nationals who obtain residency in Mauritius gain far more than the right to live on the island. Mauritius residency provides access to a stable democracy ranked first in Africa for governance, a modern healthcare system, internationally recognised schools teaching in English and French, and one of the continent's most developed financial services sectors.
Mauritius has no inheritance tax, no estate tax, no gift tax, and no capital gains tax. Income tax is capped at a maximum of 15%, and the island maintains an extensive network of 46 Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements and 44 Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements, making it a favoured jurisdiction for individuals and families seeking tax efficiency alongside quality of life.

Residency Options at a Glance
Mauritius provides several distinct residency pathways, each suited to different circumstances and objectives:
Retired Residence Permit
For individuals aged 50 and above with a monthly income of at least USD 2,000. Valid for 10 years, renewable, with a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years.
Investor Occupation Permit (USD 50,000)
For foreign nationals who establish or invest in a Mauritius company with a minimum capital transfer of USD 50,000. Grants a 10-year work and residence permit.
Investor Occupation Permit (USD 100,000)
A higher-investment route with lower annual turnover thresholds in the early years, also valid for 10 years.
Professional Occupation Permit (Pro-Pass)
For skilled professionals employed by a Mauritius-based company at a minimum salary of MUR 30,000 per month.
Expert Pass
For senior executives and highly qualified professionals earning MUR 250,000 or more per month.
Self-Employed Occupation Permit
For freelancers and independent professionals who invest USD 50,000 and operate a one-person business from Mauritius.
Residency by Property Acquisition
Foreign nationals who invest a minimum of USD 375,000 in an approved residential property (PDS, IRS, RES, or Smart City) receive residency for as long as they hold the property.
Innovator Residence Permit
For entrepreneurs developing highly innovative R&D projects, applied through the Economic Development Board or a recognised incubator.
Dependants and Family
All Mauritius residency pathways allow eligible dependants to accompany the main permit holder. This includes a spouse or common-law partner, unmarried children under 24 (including stepchildren and legally adopted children), and fully dependent parents. Dependant permits are valid for the same duration as the main permit.
Pathway to Permanent Residency
Most Mauritius residence permit categories offer a pathway to a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit after 5 consecutive years. The specific financial thresholds vary by permit type, but the principle is consistent: demonstrate sustained commitment to Mauritius through residence and economic activity, and the country will offer you long-term security in return.
