Mauritius Professional
Occupation Permit (Pro-Pass)

What is the Professional Occupation Permit (Pro-Pass)?

The Professional Occupation Permit, known as the Pro-Pass, is the standard work permit for foreign nationals employed by a company based in Mauritius. It allows skilled professionals to live and work on the island for the duration of their employment contract, up to a maximum of 10 years. The minimum basic monthly salary is MUR 30,000 (raised from MUR 22,500 under the Finance Act 2025).

Mauritius actively recruits international talent across key sectors including technology, financial services, healthcare, education, hospitality, and engineering. The Pro-Pass is the route for professionals who have secured a position with a Mauritius employer and want to relocate with their family.

Foreign nationals can apply to work in Mauritius through the Professional Occupation Permit, which allows them to live and work in the country for up to three years, or for the duration of their employment contract. This permit must be applied for by the Mauritian employer.

Investment Rights for Professionals

Professionals holding an Occupation Permit are permitted to invest in businesses in Mauritius under the following conditions:

  • They must not be employed by the business they invest in.

  • They must not receive a salary or employment benefits from that business.

They may, however, hold shares in the company where they are employed, as long as they are not the majority shareholder.

Pro-Pass vs Expert Pass

The Pro-Pass and Expert Pass are both Professional Occupation Permits, but they serve different levels of seniority. The Pro-Pass requires a minimum salary of MUR 30,000 per month and is designed for mid-level professionals, technicians, and skilled specialists. The Expert Pass requires a minimum salary of MUR 250,000 per month and is intended for C-suite executives, directors, and highly specialised consultants. Both offer a 10-year permit with family inclusion.

Sectors in High Demand

Mauritius has a growing need for international professionals in several fields: fintech and software development, data analytics and artificial intelligence, digital marketing and e-commerce, financial services and fund administration, healthcare and medical specialisms, renewable energy and environmental engineering, and hospitality management. If your skills align with these areas, the Pro-Pass application process is typically straightforward.

What Happens If You Lose Your Job?

If your employment contract ends, your Pro-Pass is cancelled and you have 30 days to either leave Mauritius, apply for a new permit, or switch to another category (such as investor or self-employed). If you are actively seeking new employment, you can apply for a 6-month extension to stay in Mauritius while searching.
